The Role of a Sponsor.
The role of a godparent or sponsor goes beyond the promise of two best friends or family members being called to participate in the sacraments and party afterwards. In the two thousand year history of our Church; sponsors have been actively involved in the formation of the candidate’s faith. That is why the Church has set up rules in the eligibility. In the Code of Canon Law, c. 872 states:
“Insofar as possible, a person to be baptized is to be given a sponsor who assists an adult in Christian initiation or together with the parents presents an infant for baptism. A sponsor also helps the baptized person to lead a Christian life in keeping with baptism and to fulfill faithfully the obligations inherent in it.”

El papel del Padrino o Madrina
El papel de un padrino o madrina va más allá de la promesa de que dos mejores amigos o miembros de la familia sean llamados a participar en los sacramentos y en la fiesta de celebración. En los dos mil años de historia de nuestra Iglesia; los padrinos han participado activamente en la Formación de la Fe del candidato. Es por eso que la Iglesia ha establecido reglas en la elegibilidad. El Código de Derecho Canónico, c. 872 dice:
“En la medida de lo posible, a la persona que va a ser bautizada se le debe dar un padrino que asista a un adulto en la iniciación cristiana o junto con los padres presente a un niño para el bautismo. El padrino también ayuda al bautizado a llevar una vida cristiana conforme al bautismo y a cumplir fielmente las obligaciones inherentes a él”.

Baptism
Candidates can have up to 2 sponsors. One male and one female and must follow the requirements stated below.

Candidates are only allowed one sponsor. Can be male or female and must follow the requirements stated below.

According to The Code of Canon Law c. 874 § 1.3
“the sponsor must be a Catholic who has been confirmed and has already received the most holy sacrament of the Eucharist and who leads a life of faith in keeping with the function to be taken on.” It makes sense if you think about it. How can someone fulfill their duties as a Sponsor if they have not gone through the initiation themselves. So Godparents for Baptism should have their 3 Sacraments.

Según el Código de Derecho Canónico c. 874 § 1.3 “el padrino debe ser un católico Confirmado que ya haya recibido el santísimo sacramento de la Eucaristía y que lleve una vida de fe de acuerdo con la función que va a asumir”. Tiene sentido si lo piensas. ¿Cómo puede alguien cumplir con sus deberes de padrino si no ha pasado por la iniciación por sí mismo? Entonces los Padrinos de Bautismo deberian tener sus 3 Sacramentos.

The Code of Canon Law c. 872 gives an age limit to the person being chosen as a sponsor.
“ have completed the sixteenth years of age, unless the diocesan bishop has established another age, or the pastor or minister has granted an exception for a just cause;”

According to c. 874 Sponsors should not have a canonical penalty. This means that the person is living in grave sin. The obstacle that usually gets in the way is the marriage situation. Also sponsors should be attending mass regularly.

Singles
A single person who is asked to be a sponsor should be someone who is not in free union with someone else. Just because there is no ring does not mean they slip through a loophole.

Una persona soltera a la que se le pide ser padrino debe ser alguien que no esté en unión libre con otra persona. El hecho de que no haya un anillo no significa que no esta viviendo en pecado grave.
Couples
Only couples who are married through the Catholic Church, qualify to be an Sponsor. Marriage is also a Sacrament given to us as a gift by God. Couples who choose to live together without this sacrament, are possibly unknowingly rejecting this gift.

Solo las parejas que están casadas por la Iglesia Católica califican para ser Padrinos. El matrimonio es también un sacramento que nos ha sido dado por Dios. Las parejas que eligen vivir juntas sin este sacramento, posiblemente están rechazando este regalo sin saberlo.
Letter of Love
Dear godparents, all of you should write a letter to your godson as a gift from your heart, this gift is more spiritual than material. This letter will emphasize the importance of receiving the sacraments that will inculcate to Love God above all things and also to love one another, to be charitable, respectful, harmonious and honest. You, as godparents, have been joyfully honored by being chosen as the very ones who will be the mentors in the child's life.

Queridos padrinos, todos ustedes deben escribir una carta a su ahijado como un regalo del corazón, este regalo es más espiritual que material. Esta carta enfatizará la importancia de recibir los sacramentos que inculcarán a Amar a Dios sobre todas las cosas y también a amarse unos a otros, ser caritativos, respetuosos, armoniosos y honestos. Ustedes, como padrinos, han sido honrados con la alegría de ser elegidos como los mentores en la vida del niño.
